United for Houston

Let’s join together to help those who need us most.

The unprecedented damage caused by Hurricane Harvey has left tens of thousands of Houstonians in need of our help. That includes over 300 officers from the Houston Police Department who have lost homes and vehicles. To help keep those officers focussed on getting Houston back on its feet, we’re giving $12 of every unit we sell this September and October to Assist the Officer.

This Houston non-profit typically provides immediate financial assistance to officers injured in the line of duty, but recently it set up a special Harvey Relief Fund. All monies raised will go directly to police personnel who have experienced personal losses.

If you’d like to donate to the Harvey Relief Fund directly, visit assisttheofficer.com/support.

More ways to give:

  1. Contribute to the Houston Police Foundation and help replace policing equipment lost in flooding.
  2. Donate to the United Way of Greater Houston’s Relief Fund online or text UWFLOOD to 41444.
  3. Give to the Houston Food Bank, where every $1 provides 3 meals.
  4. Support the American Red Cross so that it can continue working day and night for those most in need.

OPS Public Safety thanks you for doing what you can to help.

OPS Public Safety to Debut Two New Products at PFE 2017

Police Fleet Expo 2017 is set for August 21 – 24 in Memphis, Tennessee, and this year we have two new products to show you there. We’re introducing our latest cargo drawer system from the new budget-friendly Pursuit Series and an electronic keypad lock, another first for us.

This will be the 14th PFE, and once again it’s set to be the biggest expo for the law enforcement fleet industry in North America. Over 80 vendors will be there. Some will be out at the Memphis International Raceway for the Ride & Drive event, where attendees can test drive the latest pursuit vehicles OPS Public Safety will be inside the tradeshow at the Memphis Cook Convention Center.

At Ride & Drive, John Wright & Associates will show off one of our dual stacked drawers inside an SUV. While over at our tradeshow booth — number 510 — the new Pursuit Series cargo drawer will feature prominently along with its weapon and new radio drawer options.

Launched in April, the Pursuit Series made its debut at NAFA in Tampa, Florida, and is our new line of modular storage units for the Chevy Tahoe and Ford PIU. Like all of our products, they’re built with lightweight aluminum, heavy-duty ball-bearing drawer slides and our unique, one-handed EZ Latch drawer opening system, which allows quick, easy access to gear and weapons. Same quality. More affordable. That’s the benefit of the Pursuit

The other new product we’re excited to show you is our electronic keypad lock. It’ll be featured on a special custom unit at our booth, and it’s now available on a selection of our drawer units. Stop by to try it out and see how it can keep your equipment more secure than a standard key lock.

We’ll also have a radio drawer unit onsite featuring a vented drawer for your electronics, as well as that SUV from Ride & Drive.

Case Study: Texas Department of Public Safety Gets Unique Storage Solution

Secure, ventilated storage is no longer a problem with OPS Public Safety’s
made-to-order Combo Radio Drawer.

From 100-plus degree temperatures to rough mountain roads to dessert terrain, the conditions can be severe for personnel with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). That’s why it’s important for their equipment to be ready, organized and working no matter the environment. And that’s why the statewide law enforcement agency turned to OPS Public Safety earlier this year when their storage units weren’t doing the job.

The Problem
There were four main problems with the department’s storage units. One, they didn’t hold equipment and gear in an organized way. Two, the units themselves rattled too much when personnel were on the roads. Three, because of the state’s sometimes high temperatures and the storage units’ lack of ventilation, the DPS’s radio equipment would overheat and not function the way it should. And four, personnel were having issues gaining access to the spare tire.

The Solution
OPS Public Safety took a very hands-on approach to solving these problems, visiting the DPS multiple times and consulting with every level of employee affected by the storage units. Back at home, we designed two different prototype units, and eventually the DPS decided on a custom version of the Combo Radio Drawer. Built with heavy gauge aluminum to prevent that rattling, the unit has a vented drawer to keep radio equipment cool as well as a long box and second drawer to keep gear organized. The vented drawer can also be used to store damp equipment. We designed an effortless system for them to gain access to their box as well, which was tested by many DPS members.

The Result
From end users to fleet personnel, everyone at the DPS who uses the new storage units is satisfied with the result. So satisfied, in fact, that the department ordered 222 of them.

“We made the top brass at DPS happy due to our unique spare tire access cover,” says Shane Lawrenson, OPS Public Safety’s Director of Business Development. “It was an exciting project to work on, and we have provided a perfect solution to a problem that our client was having. That is the way we approach each and every client we deal with.”

OPS Public Safety Launches Series of Budget-friendly Vehicle Storage Systems

With the new Pursuit Series, law enforcement agencies no longer have to choose between affordability and quality — they can have both.

(Schaumburg, Illinois) – OPS Public Safety today announced the launch of its Pursuit Series, a growing line of affordable interior storage systems for the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Police Interceptor Utility. Aimed at law enforcement agencies needing secure, user-friendly storage solutions for weapons and gear without breaking the bank, the series includes three different modular units, and more are on the way. Each provides significant cost savings over the company’s premium line of products.

“With law enforcement moving away from sedans and towards more expensive SUVs, that leaves fewer dollars for interior storage units,” said Shane Lawrenson, OPS Public Safety’s Director of Business Development. “With the Pursuit Series, however, fleet managers will be able to stretch their budgets while still getting the high-quality, user-friendly storage solutions we’re known for.”

The three units available now within the Pursuit Series are the single storage drawer, the weapons cabinet and the weapons drawer. Like the company’s other storage systems, these are modular units, meaning the weapons drawer and weapons cabinet can easily be exchanged on top of the single storage drawer using an easy four-bolt installation system. Also, like OPS Public Safety’s premium systems, the drawers come with a latch that only requires one hand to open, while the cabinet uses heavy-duty hydraulic gas shocks to keep the lid securely open and closed.

Built with aluminum and finished with black powder coating, all three units have 200-pound-capacity slides, more interior space than the products of the company’s competitors, stainless industrial key locks, and raised mounting brackets to give quick access to the spare tire.

“These three units are just the beginning of the Pursuit Series, however,” said Lawrenson. “We also have a whiteboard drawer and a radio tray drawer still to come. Together with our full line of storage solutions, they’ll give our customers a complete range of options to keep their weapons and equipment secure no matter the budget.”

A custom design for the Salt River Police Department

Just east of Scottsdale, Arizona, sits the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, a 52,000-acre territory in the Sonoran Desert policed by the Salt River Police Department (SRPD). Sand, dirt and wind are just part of the job for the SRPD, but those desert elements can also damage valuable equipment. Enter OPS Public Safety…

The Problem                                                                                                                                                                                       Sand and dirt was blowing into one of the SRPD’s storage boxes, damaging the equipment kept inside. Unable to find a storage unit to prevent this problem, the SRPD contacted OPS Public Safety to engineer a custom unit that would keep the desert elements out.

The Solution                                                                                                                                                                                         After a number of one-on-one consultations, OPS Public Safety offered a few custom solutions. The final design SRPD chose has a fold-down door that prevents sand and dirt from entering, and weather stripping around the frame, making the unit fully water and sand tight. As an added bonus, OPS Public Safety also developed a boltless application so that drilling isn’t needed to move the unit to another truck. Reinstallation takes less than 15 minutes.

The Result                                                                                                                                                                                               The SRPD couldn’t be happier with the result, particularly with the personalized service OPS Public Safety offered until the right solution was found

“You worked with our lead fleet person and myself, and came up with an enclosed unit which, to my knowledge, is unique in the industry. I have heard nothing but praise from my officers, and I have observed equipment to be clean and serviceable. I would highly recommend OPS boxes.”

James W. Sutphen, Commander, Salt River Police Department

New Combo Radio Drawer was a Huge Hit at IACP 2016

OPS Public Safety’s new Combo Radio Drawer was the biggest draw to their booth at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference and Exposition in San Diego, California, last month (October 15 – 18).

It was the first time the company attended the annual event that’s become the largest gathering of law enforcement leaders in the world. With over 750 exhibitors, it features educational programming, keynote speakers, community-building specialists, and collections of tactical equipment and technology solutions.

OPS Public Safety’s IACP show collection was displayed in a 30-foot by 40-foot red-carpeted booth — the largest footprint at an event like this for the manufacturer of high quality weapon and gear vehicle storage drawers.

“The most popular item for us there was our FIU Combo Unit with a Radio Drawer,” says OPS Public Safety’s VP of Sales, Shane Lawrenson. “And that was great to see because it’s one of our newest items, and we’re certainly proud of it.”

Designed to keep radio equipment from overheating, the Combo Radio Drawer also provides secure storage for weapons in the long box and gear in the top drawer, while the vented drawer can be used to keep communications equipment cool or store officers’ damp clothing.

The Combo Radio Drawer was displayed in an SUV along with five other units at IACP 2016, along with a New Mexico State Police pickup truck (complete with an officer). Visitors could also fuel up with free Starbucks coffee and enter to win a Garmin SmartWatch.

“We’ll return to IACP in 2017 in Philadelphia,” says Lawrenson, “Who knows which storage drawer will be the big hit next year?”

CVE Wheel/Axles Scales Unit Draws Crowds at PFE 2016

On August 24 and 25, OPS Public Safety attended the Police Fleet Expo (PFE) in Columbus, Ohio, and according to the team on the ground, the company’s CVE Wheel/Axles Scales Unit was a huge hit.

Specifically designed for Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and available for Ford Explorer and Tahoe pursuit vehicles, the scales unit holds four scales along with gear and rifles. It’s manufactured with heavy gauge aluminum and heavy-duty, 200-pound ball bearing slides.

“A few visitors to our booth at PFE 2016 were particularly impressed by the scale unit’s ability to hold four scales,” says OPS Public Safety’s VP of Sales, Shane Lawrenson. “They liked its great storage capacity as well and that you are still able to gain easy access to the spare tire in a quick, efficient manner. Some also noted that with this unit you don’t have to purpose a large SUV or pickup truck to do the job. You can outfit a less expensive vehicle while fulfilling the same purpose. It was great to see that positive response.”

Lawrenson and his team had five other drawer units onsite, too, including a pickup truck with the company’s Maximizer-3 Drawer Unit in it.

This was the 13th year for PFE, which is an expo all about the latest and greatest fleet products and services for the law enforcement industry. Showcasing over 80 vendors and open to all law enforcement personnel, OPS Public Safety took part in the four-day PFE event featuring the tradeshow and an outside Ride & Drive event where attendees can test drive the latest pursuit vehicles.

By the end of PFE 2016, OPS Public Safety had made almost 100 contacts — the NYPD, Massachusetts State Police and Florida Highway Patrol among them. “The reasons for that success were many,” says Lawrenson, “but the CVE Wheel/Axles Scales Unit was a big one.”
